How to Move Partitions in Windows Server 2022/2025

by John, Updated on: June 4, 2026

There are many reasons why you need to move partitions in Windows Server 2022/2025. For example, you might find that you cannot extend C drive after shrinking the D drive. To fix this, you can move the D drive to the right. This action places the unallocated space immediately next to the C drive. Additionally, when the system disk is full, you can move one or more partitions to another disk. This approach safely frees up space to extend the C drive. This article explains how to move a partition on the same disk. It also covers how to move a partition to a completely different disk.

Diskpart cannot move partitions in Server 2022/2025

Like previous versions, Windows Server 2022 and 2025 include built-in partition management tools. These utilities are Disk Management and the diskpart command-line tool. Both tools can delete, create, format, shrink, and extend partitions. However, neither of them can move a partition. These native tools cannot change the starting position of any existing volume. For this reason, they can only shrink a partition from right to left.

You may want to shrink a partition from left to right. Alternatively, you may need to move a partition to a new position. To perform these operations in Windows Server 2022/2025, you must use safe third-party disk partition software.

Move a partition to the left/right and end of disk

Moving a partition changes its starting and ending positions. During this operation, all files inside the volume are relocated to new sectors. This process carries a potential risk of data loss. Therefore, it is critical to use safe partition software. NIUBI Partition Editor outperforms other utilities in data protection. It features unique Virtual Mode, Cancel-at-will, 1-Second Rollback, and Hot-Clone technologies. These advanced features comprehensively protect your server system and data.

Please note one key rule before starting. No software can move a partition directly over another partition. A partition can only be moved to the left or right if there is adjacent unallocated space available.

You might have already shrunk the D drive. However, you still cannot extend the C drive using Disk Management. If you encounter this issue, follow the steps below. These instructions will guide you to move the D drive to the right.

How to move partition in Windows Server 2022/2025 to the right:

  1. Download and launch this utility. Right-click the D drive and select "Resize/Move Volume". In the pop-up window, drag the middle of the D drive toward the right. This action moves the D drive to the right. It also moves the unallocated space to the left.
  2. Right-click the C drive and select "Resize/Move Volume". Drag the right border toward the right. This step merges the unallocated space into the C drive.
  3. Click "Apply" in the top-left corner to execute the changes. The operation is now complete.

If an intervening partition, such as a Recovery or OEM partition, is located between the C and D drives, you must move that partition to the right as well. Once the unallocated space becomes strictly adjacent to the C drive, you can easily extend it.

If you want to extend the E drive after shrinking the D drive, you can accomplish this without moving any partitions or unallocated space. Simply right-click the E drive and select "Resize/Move Volume," then drag the left border toward the left within the pop-up window to merge the unallocated space.

How to move a partition to another disk

As previously mentioned, when a disk runs out of space, moving one or more partitions to another drive is an excellent alternative to full-disk cloning or backup restoration. After migrating these partitions, you can delete the originals on the source disk to allocate the released space to the C drive.

To move a partition to another disk, the destination disk must contain unallocated space. If no such space is available, you can easily create it by shrinking an existing volume on that disk. To do this, right-click a partition on the destination disk, select "Resize/Move Volume," and drag either border inward in the pop-up window.

How to move partition in Server 2022/2025 to another disk:

  1. Right-click a partition, such as the D drive, and select "Copy Volume." In the pop-up window, select the unallocated space on the destination disk.
  2. Adjust the size, location, and type of the target partition, then click "Finish."
  3. Right-click partition D, select "Change Drive Letter," and reassign it to any other available letter.
  4. Change the drive letter of the newly copied partition to D.
